With the cyber security skills gap continuing to grow, inspiring and supporting the next generation has never been more important. On July 17th, CIISec welcomed future talent to its student event Pathway to Progress at Canopi, London — a day designed to provide real-world insights into the industry, while highlighting the power of community in building a successful career.
The event was fully subscribed, filled with over 60 enthusiastic students alongside supportive industry professionals. This balance created a warm and welcoming environment where early career talent could learn, ask questions, and begin forging valuable connections. Attendees enjoyed early career talks, panel discussions, and networking opportunities with a wide range of professionals from across the cyber security community.
“It was lovely to spend the day with such bright and curious students, all eager to learn and take that next step in their journey. Seeing them connect with professionals, ask thoughtful questions, and grow in confidence was really heartening. Events like this truly show how we can help students find their way while also filling the skills gap our industry faces. I couldn’t be more delighted with how successful the day was.”
– Amanda Finch, CEO, CIISec
Event Highlights
- Showcasing Cyber Apprenticeships and Industry Resources
Paul Thorlby (QinetiQ) and Kevin Streater (CIISec) shared valuable insights into the benefits of cyber apprenticeships. These programmes provide hands-on experience, industry-recognised qualifications and a direct route into fulfilling roles — often without the need for a traditional degree. Their message was clear: there is no single pathway into a cyber security career. Students also discovered opportunities such as the UKCSC’s Cyber Access Network and the NCSC’s Bursary Scheme.
- Live Q&A Panels
Students posed thoughtful questions to a diverse panel of professionals, gaining practical advice on career skills, pathways into the industry, and the importance of certifications. The panellists shared personal stories and experiences, helping students understand what it takes to thrive in the fast-paced world of cybersecurity.
“I enjoyed hearing from both the early careers and seasoned professionals’ panels since I was able to receive insight from two different perspectives on cybersecurity and how to evolve along with the field.”
– Irede O, CyberEPQ Alumni
- Building a Professional Profile
Marie Wilcox (Binalyze) delivered an inspiring session on developing a strong professional identity and building meaningful industry connections. Her guidance on optimising LinkedIn profiles and approaching professionals with confidence was particularly well received.
- Building a Bridge from Classroom to Career
Pathway to Progress is part of CIISec’s broader commitment to supporting early career development and addressing the growing talent gap in cybersecurity. By creating approachable, informative spaces for students, CIISec hopes to inspire more young professionals to explore careers in the field and feel confident in their ability to contribute.
“We need to get entrants from all sections of society and abilities seeking access to the profession. I don’t think any organisation is running sessions like this which demonstrate the accessibility of the profession. We should definitely do more.”
– Peter Loomes MCIIS, IASME
What’s Next?
Building on the success of this event, CIISec is planning a series of student-focused webinars to continue the conversation around early career development in cyber security. If you’d like to be involved, please contact development@ciisec.org to express your interest.
